Default Ranger Questions

Hi folks!

Just started to read up on this game, and will probably buy it when it comes out. I have a few questions for those of you who are currently playing the game, on rangers.

1. How effective is the ranger class, in terms of damage output, as well as overall effectiveness?

2. What sub is most usefull for the ranger setup for damage output? I would assume warrior?

3. Would you recommend ranger as a class for someone starting out in this game?

Thank you for your time and answers

I played a Ranger primary the last 2 Beta Events with Mesmer as my secondary. Personally, I haven't had a different secondary for the Ranger but I can see them all having benefits. Warrior would probably be good for defensive stances and the like. With a decent bow (13-24) I can usually deal, with no bonuses, some comparable damage to the warriors on my team (just can't attack as fast). However with Skills like Read the Wind and Hunter's Shot, I can easily do 60+ damage with a bow and have a chance to cause Bleeding. Overally, I really like the Ranger class, and I usually don't play them in other games.

As for a new Character, I would have to say Yes to recomending them. Warrior is probably the easiest to start, but the Ranger plays a bit of a slower game so it can be more forgiving. Most classes are fine for starting, the game isn't that hard until later anyway.

Thank you for your response shrapnel.

What are the advantages of using mesmer as a sub?
Will I as a ranger, always be outdamaged by a warrior?

Thanks

ensign has put up a good guide here on the effectiveness of several professions in regards to damage output when using a particular skillset:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/content...ess-id1103.php

that particular build is using an elementalist conjure element skill, which is a particular favorite for those seeking damage buffs.
Conjure Element+Read the Wind+Power Shot=31 dps initially
compared to a warrior using:
Conjure Element+Warrior's Cunning (100 AL)+Galrath Slash=40.11 dps initially

personally, i have always taken a ranger for the pets..

As for outdamaging, it all depends on your skills

Well, after some conversations with people with Higher Knowledege of the game than me, I have been rethinking some stuff about the Mesmer. I still recommend it, but for different reasons.

Well, you probably SHOULD be out-damaged by a warrior in combat, lol. The Warrior and Ranger play 2 different games unless they're mixed... then it's up to you. The Ranger, by default, is a supportive character, where the Warrior, by default, is definitly a "Front Line" character.

As for the Advantages of a Mesmer, I really can't say because I haven't played the game a whole lot (probably like 9 or so days total in the Beta Events) and my first character was a Warrior/Necromancer. I haven't had the time to try out and test a lot of things, unfortunatly. All I can say is that at the lower levels (1- 15) and during Missions, I've had nothing but success with the Ranger/Mesmer combo, using Illusion Magic (although it's been pointed out that this might not be the best way to go if you want to remain competitive).

In the end, EVERY single combo CAN be good... it's just a matter of skill selection. It all comes down to preference and play style. My only suggestion is to try it out and see what you like. When the game is released, you'll have all the time you want/need to do so. In the Beta Weekends... just have fun.

Rangers are second to no one in the ability to focus fire a character to death and their armor allows them to live for a long time. In fact, you're normally one of the last professions to be targeted in a battle.

I wouldn't say that a ranger/warrior would be the best damage dealer. Of course if you have to go into melee range it'll be a little more effective, but if you can stay at range there's a lot of options.

I personally enjoy running a ranger/necro. This character allows me to put out a ton of damage with my ranger skills, and to also effectively cripple most enemies with a mixture of ranger and necro skills such as rend enchantments, enfeeble, pin down, concussion shot, etc...
